The ED and hospital are a critical but under-utilized opportunity to detect elder mistreatment and initiate response. Really enjoyed participating with colleagues in a ground-breaking meeting hosted by the Texas Elder Abuse & Mistreatment (TEAM) Institute at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston). At the meeting, pioneer Carmel Dyer was posthumously recognized for her extraordinary impact on the field and generous, collaborative spirit. We heard about the amazing work of and challenges faced by the Vulernable Elder Services, Protection, and Advocacy (VESPA) team at University of Colorado School of Medicine and our Vulnerable Elder Protection Team (VEPT) at Weill Cornell Medicine. The recently-formed UT Houston Roybal Center for Elder Mistreatment Intervention Research discussed their plans to support innovative projects (https://www.uth.edu/elder-mistreatment/) We appreciate the participation of folks from so many departments at UT Houston, The University of Texas Medical Branch and Texas Adult Protective Services -- and are excited about potential next steps.
