Thanks to ACP Hospitalist, American College of Physicians, and writer Janet C. for highlighting elder abuse and ED/hospital-based response teams in the most recent issue. Being alert to elder abuse is essential for hospitalists and other hospital-based clinicians to identify it and initiate intervention. Elder abuse is often first identified during a hospitalization, and the hospital has access to a broad range of resources that can reduce mistreatment after discharge. In fact, services can be added for an older adult within a three-day hospitalization that would take weeks, months, or longer to add in the community. Thanks to Laura Mosqueda, Elizabeth Bloemen, MD, MPH, and Lsa Rachmuth, who were also quoted and have been so important in the field. Here is a link to the full story (though it is only available to folks who are ACP members).
