Being alert to elder abuse is essential for hospitalists and other hospital-based clinicians to identify it and initiate intervention. Elder abuse is often first identified during a hospitalization, and the hospital has access to a broad range of resources that can reduce mistreatment after discharge. In fact, services can be added for an older adult within a three-day hospitalization that would take weeks, months, or longer to add in the community.
