I really enjoyed contributing recently to the amazing First Responders course for new medical students Weill Cornell Medicine and Joan & Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University and to add my welcome to them as they begin their training. This amazing course with lectures and hands-on simulation is led by colleague Julie Zhao and given annually at the beginning of med school by the Department of Emergency Medicine physician faculty, advanced practice providers, and residents. It helps prepare new med students (who may now be looked at by family members and friends as medical experts even thought they've just started med school!) to respond to medical and traumatic emergencies that may happen in a subway station, on an airplane, or anywhere else. The students enthusiastically participated in the simulated scenarios (with really great actors posing as patients!) I presented about traumatic injuries and worked with colleagues Bruce Gutierrez and Charles Kwon, MD teaching how to respond to a pedestrian struck by a car with severe leg and arm injuries.
It was great to work with so many folks from Emergency Medicine on this course: Vice Chair of Education Kaushal Shah, Mark Curato, Sam Senturia, Jaclyn Itzkowitz, PA-C, Bruce Gutierrez, Vincent Uy, Justine Ko, Gena Won, Abdul-Aziz Ahmed, Charles Kwon, MD, Lauren McCue, MSN, RN, ACNPC-AG, Dina Saba, Sarah Perelman, MD
Thanks also to Wally Carter and Jeremy Sperling and the other folks who initially developed this course (in 2002!) to train and support these future doctors as they begin their medical education.
