Systematic Review of Geriatric ED Guidelines on Elder Mistreatment

As a preliminary step in updating the Geriatric ED Guidelines for elder mistreatment, we conducted systematic literature reviews to describe the impact of ED-based screening tools and ED-initiated interventions. We did not find any studies related to either screening or intervention that met all of our inclusion criteria. We found studies describing multiple screening tools and multidisciplinary intervention models, but they lacked comparator groups, standardized reference standards, or clinically meaningful outcome measures. These empty systematic reviews emphasize the large existing knowledge gaps about ED elder mistreatment screening and intervention. These gaps affect the ability to make practice recommendations and highlight opportunities for future rigorous research to inform our ongoing guideline development.
